Hello World! My entire blog and 9 years full of writing was erased last week. I tried everything to save it, and then I realized that it wasn’t going to happen. So, here I am, starting over. I don’t think it’s a bad thing, it just is what it is.

You know, I got thinking about why I was trying so hard to save it? It started off as a part of my wedding invitation, so that friends and family could connect with our hotel room block and book into our group golf day. The original website was youcanhavemypickle.com Ha!!

After the wedding, we did a series of posts about holidays that we took, and I started to observe and comment about local events and local politics. As I found my writing style through the blog’s progression, I continued to write about a variety of topics. In 2011, my blog took on a more focused and direct approach. I decided to run for Municipal council, and needed to articulate my platform. It was at that time that I redesigned the site and renamed it. I looked at every aspect of council and local governance and tried to describe how I felt about them.

November 2011, there were 25 candidates for council, and 6 candidates for Mayor. The outgoing council was criticized for absolutely everything. Every decision that they had made was picked apart and destroyed. They had steered the community through the global financial explosion of 2008, the 2010 Winter Olympics, and the inevitable Olympic hangover of 2011. Even though the Olympic Games were wildly successful, there were big bills and big promises that went along with it. I had friends supporting me, but really didn’t have much name recognition or a strong enough platform to stand out enough in that massive field. I was inspired and fired up to go at it again. Jack Crompton, who became someone supportive (and won a seat on that 2011 Council) advised me to attend council meetings, get involved, volunteer on a board. And so I did. I attended nearly every council meeting from 2011 to 2014. I volunteered on the board of Whistler Animals Galore. I was elected to the board of the Whistler Housing Authority. I got involved. I continued to comment on local goings-on on my blog. I also tweeted about what was happening from a twitter account @whipoli

On November 19, 2014 I won the 6th seat on Council by only 12 votes. I still to this day am amazed that it happened. I was in such a difficult time of my life. I was finishing my final month of maternity leave, returning to a job on ski patrol, not knowing how anything was supposed to roll out. There was no handbook of instructions. Needless to say, I fumbled around for a while. I discovered the meaning of writers block or perhaps it was just a lack of time, but I didn’t keep up my blog.

The past three years, I have worked hard to make the best decisions I can. I have learned more about municipal governance and about myself. Here we are at the beginning of the last 10 months of my term. I guess it is time to reopen the book and get this going again!
